Scottsdale Update - May 4, 2017

HEADLINES

Back-to-School Program eligibility screenings take place this month. Call Vista del Camino at 480-312-2323 for a screening appointment or to find out how to donate items. Donors will provide school supplies and clothes for up to 1,000 children.

Temperatures are rising - obey hiking and hydration rules. Play it safe when hiking: Take a buddy. Hydrate the day before you go. Bring plenty of water and your phone. Tell friends and family where you're heading and when you plan on returning. Watch this.

Economic Development Week is May 8-13. The week is designed to increase awareness for local programs that create jobs, advance career development opportunities and enhance quality of life. Check out city efforts that further this mission.

EVENTS

Seniors invited to hands-on craft events. Attend one of two events: Saturday, May 6, at Appaloosa Library; or Thursday, May 11, at Civic Center Library. Both run from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Supplies for calligraphy, painting, coloring, beading, textiles and more will be provided. The free program is hosted by "Senior Makers @ SPL," a grant-funded initiative to provide arts and technology programs to seniors.

Date night - Scottsdale style, takes place May 13. Looking for a fun night out with friends or your significant other? This unique event, held from 6 to 10 p.m. Saturday, May 13, at Scottsdale Stadium, is for those 21 and older. It features tours, gourmet food trucks, beer and wine, and a movie to cap off the night.

Event to raise funds for Operation Fix It. Dine at the Hilton Village Humble Pie Wednesday, May 10, and a portion of the proceeds will benefit Operation Fix It. This city program teams volunteers and local businesses to provide labor and materials to help eligible residents maintain their properties. Watch this.

Stamp out hunger May 13. Help restock Scottsdale's Vista del Camino Food Bank by participating in the National Association of Letter Carriers' Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Place nonperishable food items near your mailbox Saturday, May 13, and your letter carrier will pick it up and deliver it to food banks.  

Family summer swim passes on sale. Get unlimited visits for public and lap swim from Memorial Day through Labor Day.

Donate items for senior centers - "Beat the Heat" program. Contribute new reusable water bottles, nutritional supplement drinks, bottled water, small healthy snack items, unused personal hygiene items, stamps and grocery store gift cards. Drop donations to the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 E. Via Linda, by early June.

Outdoor watering tip for May - adjust those sprinklers. Adjust your landscape sprinkler/irrigation system to reflect the summer rains and monsoon. Remember to stop a watering cycle if it rains a half-inch or more. And check your controller settings after a power outage. Learn more.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Protect your identity at document shredding event, Saturday. Bring your personal and/or commercial documents to the "Shred It" event from 7 to 10 a.m. Saturday, May 6, in the Wal-Mart parking lot, 15355 N. Northsight Blvd. A $3 per box donation is suggested.

Plug into Electronics Recycling Day Saturday. Scottsdale residents can recycle unwanted electronics from 7:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, May 6, at the city's Corporation Yard, 9191 E. San Salvador. Items accepted include computer, office and entertainment equipment.

"Reading Buddies" helps children improve reading skills. Trained teen volunteers will use IPads, games and crafts to augment reading skills in a fun atmosphere. Registration for the free program opens Saturday, May 6, and the program starts Tuesday, June 6. Call 480-312-READ (7323) for details.

Celebrate Children's Book Week with Mother Goose through May 12. This iconic figure will share stories, rhymes and finger plays at various times, dates and locations. Space is limited; be sure to check in with a library staff person before the start of the program.

Meet Scottsdale's eight Sister Cities. Learn a little bit about all eight Sister Cities and the special relationship with each. The free program is at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Arabian Library.
