Scottsdale Update - Aug. 3, 2017

HEADLINES

Desert Discovery Center proposal is online. The community can learn more by accessing the document and attending a series of meetings. The City Council will address the project at a late September study session.

Focus on safety as students head back to school. School starts next week and that means more cars, bicyclists and pedestrians will be on the streets. Remember, it's everyone's responsibility to know the rules of the road whether you're walking, bicycling or driving.

McCormick-Stillman Railroad Park closed for maintenance, Aug. 7-11. Enhancements include painting many outdoor shade structures, deep cleaning public facilities, repairing trains and making several other improvements. The park will reopen at 9 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 12.

EVENTS

Hula to the Safety Luau Saturday. Learn practical tips on water safety all while having fun. The event takes place from 4 to 8 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 5, at Eldorado Aquatic Center. Highlights include games, a mock rescue, and live hula and fire dancers. Regular pool admission fees apply.

August is Drowning Impact Awareness Month. Arizona consistently ranks among the worst states for drowning. But drowning is preventable. Show your support and commitment to water safety by wearing a purple ribbon during August. Get one at any Scottsdale fire station or aquatic center.

Picking up children from school? Toxic vehicle emissions are more concentrated at ground level where children breathe. Avoid idling. While waiting, turn off your engine and roll down your window.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Learn how to create engaging, relevant marketing. Discover the secrets of selling your products and services without being overt. This free class is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9, in Civic Center Library's Eureka Loft.

"Using Infrared to Remotely Control Robots" - a "50 Forward" program, Aug. 12 and 17. Get hands-on instruction on how to remotely control a robot. "50 Forward" is a grant-funded series that invites those 50 and older to experiment, learn and play with new technology. Two free sessions are available: 10:30 to noon Saturday, Aug. 12, at Appaloosa Library; and 1:30 to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 17, at Civic Center Library.
