Scottsdale Update - Aug. 24, 2017


Industry leading software company features Scottsdale's innovative use of mapping technology. The annual ESRI Map Book showcases best-in-class use of the company's geographic information system software, selected from entries around the world. Scottsdale's fire hydrant map, developed as part of an effort to streamline maintenance and repair of the city's 11,000 fire hydrants, was featured.

Local nonprofit will revitalize the "Handlebar Helpers" program.  STARS is beginning a one-year agreement to use the former Handlebar Helper bike shop at the Paiute Neighborhood Center to teach bike repair skills to adults with disabilities. Handlebar Helpers began as an earn-a-bike and apprentice program in 1994 but has been dormant since August 2016. 


A playlist of Scottsdale history is now available on YouTube that includes 17 videos covering many aspects of our community's history.


Senior center hosts Senior Prom - An Evening Under the Sea. This underwater-themed dance includes live entertainment, refreshments and all styles of dancing. The event is at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 30, at the Granite Reef Senior Center. Cost is $5 for residents, and registration is required.

Fire Fighters Charities wants to help feed more families in our community - and you can help. The organization's new program, "12 Months of Caring," will collect food throughout the year for Vista del Camino Food Bank. Food donation bins are located at the Witzeman Public Safety Building and Scottsdale fire stations, making it easy to drop off donations any day, anytime. Items most needed are cereal, pet food and peanut butter.

A new air system will help exercisers sweat comfortably at Club SAR. The new system will provide greater efficiency, increased information technology network security and reduced service calls - city HVAC technicians will be able to monitor and adjust temperatures remotely. Installation is scheduled to begin mid-October. Club SAR is among Scottsdale's most popular fitness centers.

Attend September's free water-efficiency workshops. Learn ways to enhance the beauty of your home while saving water and money. "Plant Selection" is from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 2; and "Irrigation Maintenance, Troubleshooting & Repair" is from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 9. Both are at Civic Center Library.
