Arizona is one of the hottest places in the country from June to September and heat-related illnesses are common during the summer. Year after year, nearly 800 people are admitted to hospitals because of heat-related illnesses.
Anyone can be susceptible to heat-related illness. Those at greatest risk are children under 4, adults over 65, people who are overweight and people who are ill or on certain medications. Heat-related illness may be serious or even deadly if unattended.
The City of Scottsdale encourages you to be on the lookout for those you may suspect could be susceptible to heat-related illnesses. Check on your neighbors, particularly if they are elderly and/or disabled, and make sure that their air conditioning systems are working properly.
Tips:
- Drink water (at least 2 liters per day)
- Dress for the heat - Wear lightweight, light-colored clothing and hats. Always apply sunscreen to exposed skin.
- Eat small meals and eat more often - Avoid foods that are high in protein which increase metabolic heat.
- Slow down - Avoid strenuous activity.
- Stay indoors when possible
- Take regular breaks
