What has happened with the 2011General Plan Update?
As explained in our Spring 2011 Newsletter, the 2011 General Plan Update process had several steps to accomplish before City Council adoption. The following represents an overview of those steps and their completion:
1. A total of three (3) Open House events were held throughout the City (northern, central and southern locations) to facilitate public knowledge and commentary regarding the proposed Scottsdale General Plan 2011;
2. A Remote Hearing was held by the Planning Commission on August 24, 2011 to allow for further public comments and Planning Commission review regarding the proposed Scottsdale General Plan 2011;
3. A Regular Planning Commission Hearing was held on September 21, 2011 in which the Planning Commission took public comment and voted unanimously to recommend that the City Council adopt the proposed Scottsdale General Plan 2011;
4. A City Council Work Study Session was held on September 27, 2011 to allow the Council to take some limited public commentary then review, discuss, and offer suggestions regarding the proposed Scottsdale General Plan 2011 content, and
5. A Regular City Council Hearing was held on October 25, 2011 in which public commentary was taken regarding the plan and the Council voted 5-2 to adopt the Scottsdale General Plan 2011.
The City Council’s adoption of the Scottsdale General Plan 2011 brings the General Plan update process to its last phase, voter ratification. Following the adoption of the Scottsdale General Plan 2011 by the City Council, Arizona State statutes require the adopted plan be placed on the ballot for a public vote. The City Council directed at its November 1, 2011 meeting that the Scottsdale General Plan 2011 be placed on the Tuesday March 13, 2012 election ballot. Until voter ratification of a new General Plan occurs, the 2001 General Plan remains in effect.
