Scottsdale Police and Fire Departments will offer 44 teens the opportunity to learn more about future careers in law enforcement and fire services June 7-11, at the 2010 Public Safety Teen Academy. This is the third year the City of Scottsdale has offered a teen academy that provides a total public safety experience, with exposure to both police and fire training.
The action-packed week is being held at the Tom Hontz Training Facility (911 N. Stadem Drive, Tempe) will feature hands-on learning and demonstrations.
Scheduled activities include firefighting search and rescue, AED and Hands-Only CPR awareness, basic first aid and triage, crime scene investigation, decision-shooting scenarios and tactical demonstrations. The students will also have the opportunity to learn from expert fire and police instructors, who will present the dynamic topics.
New this year is an entire day focused on teen driving issues and the role that public safety plays in these cases. This includes a crash demonstration, vehicular crime investigation, and Trauma Nurses Talk Tough presentation by Scottsdale Healthcare, as well as field sobriety tests.
The academy will conclude with a graduation ceremony at 2:30 pm. on Friday, June 11 at Civic Center Library.
Teens interested in pursuing a career in public safety are encouraged to apply for Scottsdale Police or Fire Explorer programs that offer year-round training and education. Additional information on the respective programs can be found at www.ScottsdalePD.com or www.ScottsdaleFD.com.
