During the month of September, two Scottsdale Fire Department employees were honored for their hard work and dedication to the community
. Scottsdale
Firefighter Sasha Weller received the Jason Schechterle Outstanding Firefighter Performance Award from the 100 Club of Arizona and
Public Education Officer Lori Schmidt was recognized as Arizona’s Educator of the Year for 2009.
The 100 Club chose Weller as the 2010 recipient based on his dedication to the community in which he lives, especially to the area youth. He has made a tremendous impact on the City of Scottsdale as a Company Officer for one of its busiest units and as a person who commits personal time and effort to reach out and assist the community’s troubled youth.
Weller’s most notable impact is on the youth at the Paiute Center where he has initiated several interactive programs designed to help increase their motivation, involvement and positive experiences. He is also involved in other charitable endeavors such as serving as the department representative for city’s United Way campaign and leading the Soles for Souls charity shoe drive.
Fire chiefs around the state selected and honored Schmidt at State Fire School by the Arizona Fire and Burn Educator’s Association on Sept. 9. Her focus is on injury prevention for youth 18 years and younger through programs such as the Public Safety Teen Academy, Fire Explorers, Teen CERT, car seat inspections, and education in the schools that address fire, road and water safety.
Schmidt is also known for her leadership in water safety as the president of the Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona and is a seasoned collaborator in her department and throughout the country.
