"Stewie the Duck Learns to Swim" Water Safety Program

Arizona is second in the nation for child drownings, with an average of 20 drownings per year in Maricopa County alone. Even when numbers decrease, the importance of vigilance and education remain high.

Scottsdale Fire Department offers a special water safety program to all Scottsdale Kindergarten and first grade classrooms. Preschool opportunities are also offered. The 20-minute presentation involves a review of water safety rules, learning a water safety song and reading of the book, “Stewie the Duck learns to Swim.”*

Water Safety messages:

Remember your ABC’s

  • Adult: Children will remember they always need an adult with them whenever they are around water. They will also learn that you are never old enough to swim alone.
  • Barriers: This is a big word for fence. Barriers can also be a locked door and a closed toilet.
  • Classes: Children should learn how to swim and their caregivers should know CPR.

Water Hazards are everywhere!

  • Lakes
  • Doggie Dishes
  • Fish Bowls
  • Anywhere that collects more than 1 inch of water.

If someone falls into the pool and they need help, what do you do?

  • Never jump in to save them.
  • Stop! Get an Adult
  • Call 911
