The city of Scottsdale has a new campaign this holiday season that makes it easier for residents to get information about city charitable programs and how to make donations.
The Scottsdale Shares campaign provides one point of contact for residents, businesses and organizations seeking to assist those in need through donations or volunteer activities.
The Scottsdale Shares campaign features a Web site that consolidates information about many of the city programs that assist those in need during the holidays. It includes links to information on how to make donations as well as a list of community needs and volunteer opportunities. The Web address is: www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/Shares.
Anyone who wants more information on local charitable programs or how to contribute can also call the city’s information phone line at (480) 312-3111. The line is staffed from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays.
Charitable programs participating in the Scottsdale Shares campaign this season are:
- The Vista del Camino Food Bank, which is experiencing exceptionally low supplies of food this holiday season.

SCOTTSDALE’S WEB SITE RANKED AMONG NATION’S BEST
Scottsdale’s Web site is among the best for cities its size in the nation, according to the Center for Digital Government and Digital Communities Magazine.
Scottsdale placed ninth among cities with a population between 125,000 and 249,999 in this year’s survey, conducted by the center in partnership with the National League of Cities.
The annual survey evaluates how U.S. municipalities are integrating information technology into operations to better serve their citizens.
"This year's winners demonstrate how cities have faced economic challenges with creativity and innovation in the use of information technology," said Cathilea Robinett, executive director for the Center for Digital Government. "The Survey clearly shows that cities place a high value on positive experiences for their constituents when using government services. These winners are at the leading edge of the future in digital advances for citizens."
The survey was open to all U.S. cities with a population of 30,000 or more and respondent cities were classified into four size-based categories. Winners will be honored at a special awards ceremony in San Antonio, Texas, on Nov. 12.
For more information on the survey and how cities ranked, visit: http://www.govtech.com/dc/surveys/cities/89/2009

SCOTTSDALE ONE OF EASIEST CITIES TO GET SOLAR PERMITS
When it comes time to install a new solar system, the local permitting process can be a difficult bureaucratic headache. Or it can be a walk in the park . . . a Scottsdale park.
Vote Solar, a nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring solar to the mainstream, named Scottsdale one of the top five best cities for solar permitting. Vote Solar cited Scottsdale as one of the best for a variety of reasons: Vote Solar cites the “best practices” fee of $250 per permit – Scottsdale’s typical charge is $148. In addition, Scottsdale issues most permits “over the counter” – meaning people can get it with no wait. Lastly, people can submit plans and purchase the permit online.
For more information about Scottsdale’s solar efforts or this recognition, contact Senior Plans Examiner Dustin Schroff at (480) 312-7762 or dschroff@ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

TAKE THE GP SURVEY AND SHARE YOUR VISION FOR SCOTTSDALE
You've likely heard about a General Plan Update, but just what is it . . . and why should you care?
The General Plan Update is our collective vision for how we want the community to evolve during the next 10 to 20 years.
Imagine taking a road trip across the country and not having a map to help find your way. The same theory applies to a city. The General Plan acts as guide. It's important because it affects how the community looks and feels, and how it will meet future needs. It provides clear direction to the future of our city, just as a map would provide clear direction on how to get from Scottsdale to your desired destination.
Arizona State law requires that communities with more than 2,500 residents adopt a General Plan. The Growing Smarter Acts require Arizona cities update their plan every 10 years. The plan is designed to be broad and flexible so that it can adapt to a changing community.
Go online now and fill out a questionnaire - www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/generalplan/update
We want to hear from you - after all, this is your community. Define your vision for it!
For more information about the General Plan Update, visit the Web link above or contact Senior Planner Carrie Wilhelme at (480) 312-2205 or generalplan@ScottsdaleAZ.gov.

SCOTTSDALE CANDIDATE PACKETS ARE NOW AVAILABLE
Candidate packets for citizens seeking a spot on a fall ballot for the Scottsdale City Council are now available from the City Clerk’s Office.
Three City Council seats are up for election in 2010. The city’s general election is set on Aug. 24 and a runoff, if needed, is set Nov. 2, 2010.
The packets include a new candidate handbook, which is also available on the city’s Web site for anyone interested in requirements to run. The handbook includes information on filing petitions, starting a candidate political committee, filing campaign finance reports and other topics. The Web address is:
http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/Assets/documents/elections/ElectionManual.pdf
The packets incorporate new information resulting from changes in state law and city code. The changes include:
- A slightly earlier election date. The state recently passed legislation adjusting its election dates, and the state requires Scottsdale’s general election to coincide with the state’s primary election date.
- A cap of 1,000 on the minimum number of signatures required to run. To be listed on the ballot, candidates are required to file nominating petitions containing at least 1,000 valid signatures, but not more than 10,310 signatures, with the City Clerk’s Office between April 26 and May 26.
Residents are limited in the number of nominating petitions they can sign. Arizona law requires only one petition be signed for every open seat in the election. In the Scottsdale general election, that means residents can sign three petitions for City Council candidates.

TIPS FOR TAKING YOUR DOG TO A CITY PARK
The Scottsdale Police Department is offering tips to help make your next visit to a city park an enjoyable one for you and your pet, as well as other park visitors. The most common park-related complaints that Scottsdale Police receive are dog related in nature. Please be a responsible dog owner by following these tips:
- All dogs must remain on a leash while in any city park except while in a designated off-leash area. Parks with designated off-leash areas are Chaparral, Horizon and Vista del Camino parks.
- Leashes must be attached to the dog and can be no longer than six feet in length.
- Any dog litter must be removed immediately. Dog litter bags are available at all city parks.
- All dogs must be licensed and display the current year's tag.
It is important to note that any dog-related violation is considered a criminal misdemeanor offense. For more information on the city's off-leash areas visit http://www.scottsdaleaz.gov/parks/offleashareas.asp
