Mission

Develop programs and planning tools that involve the community in defining its vision. Assist in enhancing and maintaining Scottsdales unique character through the application of design and environmental standards. 


 
The General Plan

The General Plan is a statement of goals and policies that work as the primary tool for guiding the future development and character of the city over the next 10 to 20 years. State law also requires updates of adopted General Plans every 10 years. 

 

Character Area Planning

The General Plan and Character Area Plans work together to provide a framework for guiding development in Scottsdale. Character Area Plans work to inform the General Plan through their specificity in study area boundary and associated goals and policies. 

 

PLAN IMPLEMENTATION

Long-range plans become reality in the implemenation phase. Implementation projects sometimes include changes to the Zoning Ordinance, capital improvements, and private investment. As a result, these projects may be completed by many different city departments.

    Our build out numbers are projected to be about 271,000 residents, 144,000 dwelling units and 231,000 jobs. These numbers derive under the assumption that Scottsdale will acquire and preserve all of the open space acreage that our voters have approved. If so, we should reach a built out condition sometime between 2018 and 2020. The spread would result from rather simple economic dynamics; i.e., as the supply (available developable land) decreases, the price increases and demand decreases. If Scottsdale were not to purchase any further acreage for our McDowell Mountain / Desert Open Space Preserve, we could be looking at a build out resident population between 295,000 to 310,000 people sometime between 2025 and 2030.
