The Preservation Division manages all activities, from land preservation to stewardship, of the effort to achieve a 36,400 acre McDowell Sonoran Preserve, and all activities involving historic and archaeological resources programs for the City of Scottsdale, and it administers the city's environmental program through the Environmental Office.  The Environmental Office assists the organization with strategic planning for sustainability, resource efficiency, citywide environmental management practices and performance, and energy and built environment policies and practices.
