The City Auditor’s Office provides independent research, analysis, consultation, and educational services to promote operational efficiency, effectiveness, accountability, and integrity in response to City needs.
The City Auditor is appointed by the City Council, serves at the pleasure of the City Council, and leads the seven-member professional audit staff. On June 2, 2009, the City Council appointed Sharron Walker as the City Auditor, effective June 15, 2009.
City Code requires an Audit Committee, consisting of three members of the City Council, appointed by the Mayor with the approval of the City Council. Currently, Councilman Robert Littlefield serves as the Chairman, and Vice Mayor Lisa Borowsky and Suzanne Klapp serve as members of the committee.
The City Auditor's Office has the responsibility of conducting audits of City activities and programs. An annual audit plan is presented to the Audit Committee for review and recommendation and to the City Council for review and approval. The Council-approved Audit Plan for FY 2009/10 is available here. Audit assignments are selected from the adopted plan.
The audit process was established to independently review, evaluate, and report on management and employee accountability of taxpayer resources. All audits are conducted in accordance with generally accepted government auditing standards, often referred to as "Yellow Book" standards.

Scottsdale is one of only two cities in Arizona, and of only 39 cities in the United States to have participated in an external peer review conducted by the Association of Local Government Auditors.
