Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd Water Line Installation
The city of Scottsdale is working on a multiyear project to install a new water transmission main under Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard. The new main is necessary to improve operational efficiency and water service reliability in the area.
The project has been broken into two phases. Phase 1, which was completed in December 2016, installed a new main from the Shea Boulevard intersection to approximately 300 feet past the Via Linda intersection. Phase 2 will extend the new main between north of Via Linda to E. 92 Street. Phase 2 began on May 30, 2017.

Water line installation is a significant construction activity, but Scottsdale is committed to minimizing customer impacts and supporting local business operations.
The water line installation is taking place in the westbound lanes of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard with two-way traffic being diverted to the eastbound lanes as necessary.
To ensure access to several critical intersections during the school year, multiple crews will be working in various zones along Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard simultaneously and work will not be completed in one linear progression.
Three sections were deemed priority areas and were completed first:
- Thompson Peak intersection: This section was completed during the summer to reopen this major intersection as quickly as possible.
- Thunderbird Road to Camino del Santo: Work on either side of 100th Street was given top priority to ensure construction was completed during the SUSD summer break.
- Cactus Road to Via Linda: This section was completed during the summer to ensure the intersection was reopened prior to the start of the SUSD school year.
Current traffic restrictions (as of October 1):
Traffic on Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd is reduced to one eastbound and one westbound lane between Cactus Road and Camino del Santo.
Westbound traffic is reduced to one lane from east of Thunderbird Avenue to 90th Street.
The left turn lane from northbound Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd to 90th Street will be closed from Oct. 23 to Nov. 3.
The speed limit is reduced to 15 mph at the traffic switch at Camino del Santo and at various points through the project as needed. Please obey posted speed limits.
What to expect during construction
Business access: Crews will prioritize maintaining access to businesses and residences, but it will be necessary to temporarily divert traffic to alternative entrances/exits as crews install the water line directly in front of driveways. Driveway closures are unavoidable, but crews will work to reopen access as quickly as possible.
Water service: All efforts will be made to avoid suspending water service, but isolated service disruptions may be necessary at various periods during the project. Impacted customers will be notified at least one week in advance of any scheduled service interruption and timing consideration for any shut-down will be based on customer water demand.
Water pressure: Customers should not see any impact to their water pressure during the project.
Work hours: Regular construction times will be 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, with additional night and weekend work as needed. Lane closures will remain in place during nonworking hours.
Sidewalk access: The sidewalk on the north side of Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard will not be accessible while adjacent lane restrictions are in place. The south-side sidewalk will remain open.
