Before You Start

Prior to seeking permits and licensing in the City you will likely have:

  • Determined there is a market for your business.
  • Registered the business name.
  • Established financing.
  • Defined or completed a legal structure for the business.
  • Searched for an appropriate business location.

Before the doors open there are important local regulatory issues that require attention.
The needs and circumstances of each business are different.
Resources presented here cover key issues affecting most small businesses.

  • Verify that the zoning of your proposed business location allows your business.
  • Apply for permits that are required for the business to open or operate.
  • Obtain your business license(s).
  • Verify your required parking requirements.
  • Place signage at your business location.
  • Understand the process to expand a business or change your business use.

FREE WORKSHOPS FOR CURRENT & FUTURE BUSINESS OWNERS

Are you a small business owner, entrepreneur, or someone thinking about opening your own business? You are invited to attend a free, four-part workshop series entitled "Starting & Staying in Business" presented by the City of Scottsdale's Economic Vitality Office and the Maricopa County Small Business Development Center.
Workshop topics and dates are as follows:

     • Business Planning -  September 23, 2010
     • Management Planning -  October 7, 2010
     • Marketing Planning -  October 14, 2010 
     • Financial Planning -  October 21, 2010

All workshops will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd. Registration is highly encouraged.

A Panel Discussion on Resources For Small Business Owners


As entrepreneurs, you are constantly thinking about ways to grow your business and increase your chances of success. Understanding how to accomplish these goals requires constant learning about yourself and your business. The Scottsdale Economic Vitality Department and the Scottsdale Public Library in partnership with the Maricopa Community Colleges Small Business Development Centers is sponsoring a session to help you identify resources to start and continue your growth.

Our panel represents a broad spectrum of organizations devoted to entrepreneurs and small business who will talk with you about who they are, why they have targeted the Arizona entrepreneur and what products and services they have to offer you.
