ARIZONA BUSINESS CONDITIONS UPDATE.

The seasonally-adjusted Arizona Business Conditions Index fell to 48.2 in October from 55.3 in September, a 12.8 % decrease. An Index reading of over 50 indicates that the local economy is growing, while a reading below 50 suggests a slowdown in the overall level of economic activity in the near term. The Arizona Business Conditions Index has fallen for four consecutive months, from 65.1 in July to 48.2 in October.

"This is likely a ripple from the real estate problems currently plaguing the state," according to Dawn McLaren, research economist at the W. P. Carey School of Business.

"While the decline in the Arizona Business Conditions Index is a concern, it should also be noted that the overall index has shown some volatility over the last year as various sectors have had to deal with both minor and major economic shocks. The index must also be read in the context of the national economy, which has been weakening."
