The Sonoran Desert is special. Visitors come from around the world to admire our unusual plants. Many grow nowhere else, such as towering saguaro and organ pipe cacti and green-barked palo verde trees. These amazing native plants help define our regional character.

Sonoran Desert Growing Conditions

Its beauty is unique, but the Sonoran Desert is a harsh environment. Native plants in our area thrive in spite of these challenges:

  • Intense summer heat and sun
  • 7 to 10 inches of average annual rain
  • Temperature extremes from 16 to 122 degrees Fahrenheit
  • Alkaline soil
  • Drying wind
