General Volunteering

Volunteering at the department can be an enjoyable experience. You're giving back to the community by helping with administrative tasks that department employees would otherwise have to accomplish. For the most part, you can pick your own hours. Those tasks include helping to file and collate paperwork, internal mail service, helping monitor specialized equipment or perhaps assisting at one of our training classes at the shooting range or mobile field force exercises. There are a variety of specialized volunteer functions that we might need help with as well. Occasionally we need help with in our investigations sections, training unit, records, budget and support services areas. You might have a special skill that we could use. As with all volunteers, an extensive background check is always required. No physical testing or requirements are generally necessary in this area of volunteering.

V.I.P. Volunteers in Policing

Would you like to volunteer your time on the streets of Scottsdale assisting the police officers and police aides of the Scottsdale Police Department? Working in emergency situations, making a difference in people's lives? Successful candidates drive a marked police car and provide traffic control at collision scenes, crime scene security, motorist assists and handicap parking enforcement. Sound like fun? If it does, the VIP program needs you!

VIP's are not dispatched to in-progress criminal incidents, do not carry a weapon and are not deliberately placed in harms way, but they do get involved in exciting things. This is a terrific opportunity to see from the inside how a police department does its job. If you are interested in a career in police work or if you're retired and looking for an opportunity to serve the community, this is a great way to get involved.

Candidates for this position must be a City of Scottsdale resident, a minimum of 21 years old, physically able to complete the duties which include minor lifting and standing for long periods of time in a variety of weather conditions, a good driving record, complete an extensive background check, polygraph and a oral interview board, before starting their training. You must have basic personal computer skills such as the ability to send and receive emails and manipulate computer files. The department uses Microsoft Office products. The ability to speak on a police radio is necessary.

Training consists of classroom lectures and practical scenarios after which the trainee must successfully complete an extensive 2-3 month field-training period while working with a senior VIP. VIP's work a minimum of one (4) hour shift each week and must be willing to attend and testify in Scottsdale city court in addition to their patrol assist time. Field Training is be done with a senior VIP and a Police Aide Field Trainer. The field training schedule is worked out based upon your availability during the week, and theirs. Court is generally once a month for 4-6 hours once you begin issuing citations for handicap violations.

If you would like more information please contact the program coordinator, Lieutenant Pat Connor, at (480) 312-7016 or by email at pconnor@scottsdaleaz.gov

Handicap Parking Enforcement Team (HPET)

Does it bother you to see vehicles with no handicap plates or placards park in handicap spaces? Do you like people, have a lot of patience, and would like an opportunity to educate them on the handicap law? If this sounds like you, we might have just the "ticket"…a real ticket book that is, just for you.

Members of the HPET patrol Scottsdale in their own vehicles, while in a volunteer uniform and using a police portable radio, identify violations, educate drivers and when necessary issue citations. They also help complete zoning notices when landowners don't have the appropriate signage. Occasionally they receive radio calls regarding handicap parking and respond accordingly.

HPET's do not handle other types of calls and are not expected to intervene in any criminal activity. They do not carry a weapon. This is a terrific opportunity to see from the inside how a police department does its job. If you are interested in a career in police work or if you're retired and looking for an opportunity to serve the community, this is a great way to get involved.
