Examination Process
The physical fitness assessment consists of a 1.5 mile run, push-ups and sit-ups. You must be able to complete a minimum of 25 push-ups and 29 sit-ups within one minute, and complete the 1.5 mile run in under 14:30 minutes without stopping or walking any portion.
Candidates are invited to a series of written examinations consisting of a multiple choice test, spelling test, and report writing exercise.
Successful candidates are invited to an oral board examination and may proceed to a background investigation and polygraph. The polygraph focuses on criminal activity; drug use/trafficking; honesty; misconduct in previous law enforcement positions; discharge from the military service for other than honorable conditions; and falsification of any information provided in the background investigation process.
Final candidates may be invited to a psychological examination; pre-employment physical examination and a pre-employment drug/alcohol test. Out-of-State applicants are responsible for any expenses incurred. However, Personnel staff try to schedule convenient and efficient testing and examinations to hold applicants' travel costs to a minimum.
