Update:

As the investigation was ongoing the suspect was identified as Michael Donald. One of the apartment’s involved in the Arson belonged to a male subject who Donald was involved with earlier in the evening when police were dispatched to a disturbance call. The second apartment fire happened at a location where Michael’s former girlfriend resided. Donald forced entry into both apartments while they were unoccupied and started a fire in the kitchens of the units.

Investigation also uncovered that the suspect had entered his place of work (Hungry Howie’s Pizza) at 2934 N. Hayden on the morning of the 8th, while it was closed, and burglarized the business taking an undisclosed amount of cash. Detectives learned of his location and on 11/8/11 at 8:00 pm a traffic stop was conducted on the suspect’s vehicle in the area of Apache and Dorsey in Tempe. Donald was taken into custody without incident.

Donald was booked on two counts of Arson and one count of Burglary.

Original Report:
This morning about midnight SPD was called to a disturbance call between three individuals at an apartment in the 7701 E. Osborn complex. Officers arrived as the situation had concluded and the parties had separated. No additional police action was necessary. At 3:45 am we were called back to the same apartment for the call of a fire. The apartment was not occupied at the time and damage was limited to the kitchen area. A short time later we were alerted to a fire at 7791 E. Osborn, located on the east side of the same complex, to another kitchen fire. This one was also extinguished early on with limited damage resulting.

During the activity about 10 surrounding residents were displaced then allowed to return a short time later.

Due to the suspicious circumstances detectives are looking at the possibility of Arson. We are currently following up on leads that we have. At this time there is no one in custody and there were no injuries.
