At 4:50 PM, police received a report of an armed robbery at the front desk of the Clarion Hotel, 5101 N. Scottsdale Rd. The suspect, armed with a knife, took cash from the register and fled on foot. A witness (hotel employee) chased the suspect to the Winfield Place apartments at 7430 E Chaparral, where he locked himself in his apartment. He was alone in the apartment.
Police arrived and the suspect yelled that we would not come out. Police negotiators and tactical teams arrived and tried to establish further contact. The suspect made suicidal statements to officers during the 90 minute standoff. When communication ceased, tactical officers made forced entry into to unit. They found the suspect in a bedroom with several self-inflicted stab wounds. Emergency medical procedures were started immediately by tactical officers. He was transported to SHC-Osborn. His injuries are not life-threatening.
The suspect was transported to SHC-Osborn, where he is being treated. He will be charged with Armed Robbery and Aggravated Assault. |
