On Tuesday at 12:45 pm SPD was called by an employee of the Bank of America (3123 N. Scottsdale Road) and told that a customer was in the bank and was there under duress and had asked for the teller to call 911. The customer stated that she had been taken to the bank by the suspect who drove her green Jeep SUV and parked it across the street in the Holiday Inn parking lot. She was unable to describe the suspect as he was wearing a head covering concealing his identity.
SPD detectives arrived at the Holiday Inn and confronted a subject who had been in the victim’s vehicle. The subject was found to be in possession of a handgun, gloves, a ski mask, and the victim’s cell phone. He was taken into custody and held for an interview.
The victim’s details of the accounts are as follows:
Prior to the situation at the bank unfolding the victim was getting into her vehicle, inside of her garage at her residence located in the 3000 block of N. Hayden when the suspect knocked her to the ground and grabbed her keys. The suspect was wearing a cloth over his face, had gloves on, and was pointing a handgun at her. The victim was forced into the passenger seat of her vehicle and driven to the bank where the suspect gave her instructions on removing cash from her account and giving it to him or he would harm the victim and her mother. When the suspect arrived at the bank the victim entered and told bank employees what was happening.
The suspect is the ex-boyfriend of the victim though the victim did not know that at the time due to his disguise.
The suspect was booked on one count each of Kidnapping, Armed Robbery, Theft by Extortion, Burglary, and Unlawful Use of Transportation. The victim was not injured.
UPDATE:
During the investigation it was learned that the victim was involved in a similar crime on 12/14/11.
Even though there was no substantiated evidence that a crime occurred detectives worked the case with the ex-boyfriend as the sole lead. The first personal contact with the suspect came on 02/21/12 where he was taken into custody. Additional charges for the December crime will be added to Harlan.
