Details:

Scottsdale police K9 team of officer Keefe and “Marco” were asked to perform a drug sweep at Coronado high school on 3/18/2009. This was one of six random searches done since January 2009 in cooperation with the Scottsdale schools. As part of the search, Marco searched the boys’ locker room and alerted to a locker. The locker was used by a student who was in gym class, using it to store his backpack during class.

School staff opened the locker and retrieved a backpack from the locker. The student returned to the locker after class and he was brought to the principal’s office. The student was confronted with the results of the police K9 search and admitted to having marijuana in the backpack. Two baggies of marijuana were found in the student’s backpack.

The student admitted to purchasing the marijuana off-campus a few days prior for his personal use. He was arrested by the School Resource Officer and taken to Scottsdale City Jail. He was booked and released to a parent/guardian after a few hours. Charges are pending for possessing marijuana and possession of marijuana in a drug free school zone.

The Scottsdale police department conducts random school sweeps at the request of school administrators to help deter drug use on school campus. Any area of the school property can be searched by the police K9’s and students are not normally present in the immediate area of the search.
