A neighbor directly east of the church was alerted by a smashing noise at the church. She looked out her window and witnessed the suspect break in the building. She dialed 911 and police responded. Officers quickly set up a perimeter around the property and observed the suspect attempt to exit the building several times. Each time, the suspect would duck back into the building upon seeing officers.
After about 90 minutes, police negotiators were able to convince the suspect to give up. He exited the building as directed by officers and was taken into custody. He was transported to Scottsdale city jail, where he became combative with the detention officers.
He being booked on felony counts of Burglary, Criminal Damage and Assault on an Officer.
The suspect's motives are not known. He did some minor damage inside the church and did not appear to have had time to steal anything from inside. He exhibited signs of alcohol and drug impairment. |
