SPD and SFD responded to a report of people stuck inside of a confined space which was later determined to be a sewage lift station in the Promenade parking lot near 7400 E. Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

When units arrived an 18 year old male had already extricated himself from the sewer area and was conscious but lethargic. He was transported to SHC Thompson Peak for treatment and is expected to recover.

Two other individuals unfortunately were unable to exit the space before succumbing to the fumes. Hazmat crews recovered the bodies and turned them over to the Medical Examiner’s Office who will determine official cause of death.

The three individuals involved worked for a private sewage maintenance company and were on scene to work on the sewage pumps at that location. The pumps were approximately 15 feet below the surface.

Businesses in the immediate area were evacuated due to the fumes for the duration of the investigation.
