Suspect vehicle after crashing into the trench near Scottsdale/Terravita
Shortly after 6 AM on Sunday, February 06, 2011 a Scottsdale police officer observed a female driver in a white pickup truck in a bank parking lot near Scottsdale Road and Carefree Highway. The officer approached the car and noticed 3 children in the truck with the driver. The driver appeared confused and did not know where she was. She then revved her engine and drove the truck toward the officer. The officer was able to step out of the way to avoid being hit, however, the truck hit the patrol car pushing it out of the way. The driver fled onto Scottsdale Road with the three children inside. The officer asked for MCSO assistance.
At the intersection of Carefree/Scottsdale, the suspect driver stopped and was met by a MCSO patrol car. The truck pushed the MCSO car from in front of her and proceeded south on Scottsdale Road. Officers gave chase and followed a few miles south to the community of Los Portones, near Scottsdale/Pinnacle Peak. The truck crashed through the community gate and into the development. She made her way back out onto Scottsdale road and struck a second Scottsdale police car. The officer in the car sustained minor injuries from the crash. Stop sticks were successfully deployed on Scottsdale Road, causing the tires of the truck to deflate. However, the driver continued north on Scottsdale Road until she lost control and crashed into a construction zone and trench near Terravita Drive and Scottsdale Road. Officers again approached the car and pulled the driver from the truck. She was combative with officers. After a successful Taser deployment, she was taken into custody. The driver was not injured in the crash and the children were unharmed throughout the incident.
Police are still investigating the cause of the criminal and erratic behavior of the suspect. Drugs are suspected, but not confirmed.
The female driver is identified at Rebekah Lynn Corwin. DOB 4/7/1981. She is a resident of the city of Maricopa. She is the mother of 2 of the children in the car, ages 2 and 4. A third child, 11 yrs old, is not her child. (No further information available on the children at this time)
CORWIN was booked into Scottsdale City jail and being charged with Aggravated Assault, Hit and Run, Endangerment, and other related charges.
Two Scottsdale officers were injured during the incident. Both were treated and released from a local hospital.
