The police need to see your license plate, all of it.
Do you have a license plate frame that shows other motorists your favorite team, slogan, or car dealer? Does it cover the state name or expiration tags? If so, it will be illegal on January 1, 2009. That means that an officer can pull you over and issue you a citation for violation ARS 28-2354.B. In Scottsdale, that can carry a fine of $120.

The new law is designed to allow officers to clearly see your license plate number, state and expiration stickers. When you are driving on the roadway, an officer needs to be able to see all the information on your license plate from any angle behind your car.
There are other important rules in ARS 28-2354.B that apply to how your plate is displayed.
- The plate has to be maintained so all of the pate is clearly legible from any angle behind the vehicle.
- Any cover or film applied to the license plate must be clear and cannot obscure the plate to any degree from any angle to the rear of the vehicle.
- It must be securely fastened to the vehicle so it does not swing, and attached at least 12” from the ground.
