The Scottsdale Police Mounted Unit began in 1985 with two horses and two officers. The mounted unit has gone through many changes during the past two decades. Today, the unit has 8 horses, 5 full time riders and 5 reserve riders. The reserve riders come from various other divisions of the police ranks, and are utilized when needed.

The officers and their mounts patrol City parks, neighborhoods, the downtown entertainment district, shopping malls, concerts and many large special events held in Scottsdale. They also play a vital role in Search and Rescue operations.

The Scottsdale Police Mounted Unit has been recognized by its peers to be among the best in the United States. The unit hosts the largest mounted training school in the country. Each year police students from across the country come to Scottsdale to receive the finest mounted police training available.
