Accreditation Unit and Policy Development Unit
| The Accreditation Unit and The Policy Development Unit are components of the Planning, Research and Accreditation Division.
These two units are responsible for development and issuance of department policies and orders and ensuring compliance with 446 standards of excellence set forth by the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA). |
CALEA is the only organization that accredits law enforcement agencies on an international basis. CALEA is comprised of Commissioners from law enforcement and private industry, and develops its standards based on worldwide "best practices".
On November 19, 1994, the Scottsdale Police Department became the 317th law enforcement agency in North America to achieve international accreditation through CALEA. This prestigious status was valid for three years, after which, the department underwent successful re-accreditation assessments in 1997 and 2000. and 2003.
The 2006 on-site assessment was yet another success. From August 20 - 23rd 2006, the department hosted three assessors who examined all aspects of the policies and procedures, management, operations and support services. Static display, panel interviews, site visits, facility tours and ride-alongs were conducted. The department received high marks and special mention for their programs such as PCIS and S.M.I.L.E, as well as the 5 year Strategic Plan. The department was awarded its fifth reaccreditation at the CALEA Conference in Reno, Nevada in November, 2006.
The 2009 on-site assessment recently concluded on August 25th, 2009. The department will be awarded reaccreditation at a later date.
