Southern Scottsdale Community Area Plan

The City of Scottsdale is in the process of creating a Community Area Plan for Southern Scottsdale. The Southern Scottsdale Community Area encompasses approximately 14 square miles of the southernmost portion of the city. The area is bordered by Phoenix and Paradise Valley to the west, Tempe to the south, and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community to the east. The area contains approximately 40% of Scottsdale’s population. Most of the housing stock and commercial facilities in this area are 30-50 years old, making it important to preserve and protect these neighborhoods while still moving towards tomorrow. |
The Southern Scottsdale Community Area includes ten public schools, three community facilities, and numerous churches. The award- winning Indian Bend Wash runs for six miles through the center of the Community Area and provides a continuous chain of lakes, parks, golf courses, ball fields and pedestrian-bike paths. Substantial employment development is located along many of the major thoroughfares; most notably the well-established automotive sales business along the Motor Mile between Scottsdale Road – 64th Street and on McDowell Road, and the new SkySong, Arizona State University Scottsdale Innovation Center at Scottsdale Road and McDowell Road.
The overall goal for the Southern Scottsdale Community Area Plan is to complete an area-specific policy document that can be incorporated into and used to update the City’s General Plan by 2011, as well as to begin implementation of the community’s goals for the area.

Working with the Hartley and Ruth Barker Branch of the Boys and Girls Club, the Advance Planning Team asked the children to design a creative and unique logo to help create a Southern Scottsdale “identity”. The design needed to contain images that are most important to Southern Scottsdale and could represent both things that exist now and things desired for the future.
The logos will be used on outreach material for the Southern Scottsdale Community Area Plan and one logo will also be used on the completed plan.
