Below is a sampling of uses allowed in single-family districts. In addition to homes, there are a number of uses that are allowed, some by-right and some with a use permit.

Bed & Breakfasts are not allowed in residential districts, and are only allowed in the C-1 district which limits the number of units to 20.
Day Care Facilities
Day care is defined as either 'Day Care Home' or 'Day Care Group Home' (depending on the number of children being cared for) and is allowed in all residential districts. A Day Care Center is considered a commercial business and typically requires a use permit.
- Day Care Home - provision of care, supervision or guidance for not more than 4 children on a regular basis for periods of care of less than 24 hours per day.
- Day Care Group Home - provision of care, supervision or guidance for at least five but not more than 10 children age 12 or under.
Horses, Livestock & Other Animals
Animals (including horses and other livestock) are regulated by the Maricopa County Health Department and by rules/regulations enforced by Homeowner's Associations or Covenants, Codes & Restrictions (CC&R's).
The city of Scottsdale does have regulations pertaining to
- commercial boarding or training and
- if there are nuisances such flies or odor.
