City seeking comments on motorized skateboard law, possible changes

The city has set four meetings to hear public comments on possible changes to a city ordinance restricting the use of motorized play vehicles - which include motorized skateboards, motorized scooters and “pocket bikes.”

The meetings are at the following times and locations:

  • Tuesday, March 29 - 6:30 p.m. - Horizon Park, 15440 N. 100th St.
  • Thursday, March 31 - 6:00 p.m. - Joint Transportation Commission and Environmental Quality Advisory Board Subcommittee meeting, City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.
  • Monday, April 11 - 6:30 p.m. - Mustang Library, 10101 N. 90th St.
  • Wednesday, April 13 - 6:30 p.m. - Civic Center Library, 3839 N. Drinkwater Blvd.

City staff will compile public comments into a report that will be given to the City Council at a future meeting, when the Council will decide whether to pursue any changes in the current ordinance. Within the past year, several other cities in Arizona have considered or enacted ordinances banning all use of these vehicles on public streets.

Scottsdale’s current ordinance restricts the use of motorized skateboards to public streets with a speed limit of 25 miles per hour or less, or on private property with the written consent of the owner. Riders must be over the age of 14. The devices are not allowed on sidewalks or multiuse paths, in city parking structures or city parks.

The city is not considering restrictions on battery-operated toys designed for young children. Possible restrictions would not apply to motorized wheelchairs and other mobility devices.
