Forensic Services Division
The Scottsdale Police Department Forensic Services Division is part of the Investigative Services Bureau. It is under the direction of the Forensic Services Division Director, who is responsible for all work produced by the division.
The Forensic Services Division is composed of the Forensic Science Laboratory Section, Crime Scene Section and Evidence Control Section. These sections are committed to provide the best possible service to our customers by providing the training and instruction necessary to enable department personnel to use the functions of the Forensic Services Division to the fullest extent while in the performance of their job duties.
The role within the department of the Forensic Services Division is to provide support and assistance to both department personnel and community members in crime scene processing, forensic analysis, maintenance of criminal history and evidence storage.
The Forensic Science Laboratory and Crime Scene Section are also recognized as being internationally accredited by the American Society of Crime Laboratory Directors/Laboratory Accreditation Board (ASCLD/LAB) under ISO 17025.

Forensic Science Laboratory Section
The Forensic Science Laboratory is composed of the latent print, controlled substances, blood alcohol, firearms /tool marks, DNA and trace units. The lab is responsible for analyzing all blood alcohol and drug submissions, processing and comparison of latent prints, DNA analysis of biological sample, firearms/tool mark examinations and serial number restorations, fire debris analysis and trace evidence examinations.
Crime Scene Section
The Crime Scene Specialists are non-sworn staff specifically trained in all aspects of crime scene processing. They are responsible for photographing, documenting and sketching crime scenes as well as recognizing, collecting and preserving all types of physical evidence.
Evidence Control Section
The Evidence Control Section is composed of the:
- Property and Evidence Unit: This unit is responsible for the proper storage, maintenance and release of all evidence and property collected by the Scottsdale Police Department.
- Photo Lab: The staff in this area maintains all digital crime scene photographic evidence as well as printing crime scene photographs as needed for investigative and trial purposes. They are also the department’s special event photographers.
- AFIS/Ten print Unit: This unit is responsible for collecting, maintaining and disseminating arrest and identity information obtained through Scottsdale Police Department arrests.
