Scottsdale Update - July 13, 2017

HEADLINES

Desert Discovery Center concept scheduled for public review in August and September. The city will receive a complete project proposal for the Desert Discovery Center Monday, July 31; the document will then be posted on the city's website. The City Council will hold a study session in late September following the public's review. Get a schedule of upcoming milestones and meetings.

Scottsdale Airport breaks ground on redevelopment project. Located on the west side of the airport, the new Aviation Business Center will include a public plaza, restaurant, event venue and two executive hangars, as well as offices for airport administration and U.S. Customs and Border Protection. Businesses in and around the airport will remain open during construction.

Healthy Arizona Worksites Program honors Scottsdale with "Gold" level honor. The award recognizes employers that are making efforts to positively affect the health and well-being of their employees, their families and their community by implementing comprehensive worksite wellness strategies. The city earned Gold status by providing programs such as nutrition classes and fitness opportunities.

EVENTS

Star-studded moonlight swims take place July 21 & 22. Did you know that the sun's UV rays can damage skin in as little as 15 minutes? Avoid the danger by swimming under the stars Friday, July 21, at McDowell Mountain Ranch Aquatic Center; and Saturday, July 22, at Eldorado. Both events are from 5 to 9 p.m. Regular pool admission fees apply.

The Arizona Get Outdoors Expo brings the outdoors to the indoors this weekend. This one-stop exploration of the great outdoors is geared to the whole family. Activities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, July 15, and from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, July 16, at WestWorld.

Brick Fest showcases mind-blowing Lego creations from around the world. This event runs Saturday-Sunday, July 22-23, at WestWorld. Build and race your own LEGO derby car, enjoy a LEGO mini golf course, shop new and vintage LEGO sets, and compete in the video game arena.

AZ Heritage Center showcases "Sonoran Silver" McDowell Sonoran Preserve. This exhibit celebrates Scottsdale's McDowell Sonoran Preserve, a large, permanently protected, sustainable desert habitat. Learn about the history of the preserve and the McDowell Sonoran Conservancy, a nonprofit group that has worked for 25 years to champion and protect the preserve. The center is at Papago Park, 1300 N. College Ave., Tempe.

Learn about planned improvements for Granite Mountain and Fraesfield trailheads. Provide feedback between 4:30 and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, July 25, at the Florence Ely Nelson Community Center. These trailheads are two of 11 that provide public access into the McDowell Sonoran Preserve.

Enjoy Downtown Scottsdale with free trolley rides. Trolleys run daily, every 10 minutes, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. Downtown trolleys connect with Scottsdale's free Neighborhood Trolley and the Valley Metro bus system. Watch this.

You're never old enough to swim alone. Adults drown, too. In fact, more adults than kids drown in Arizona. Follow these tips to prevent drownings.

PROGRAMS & SERVICES

Show your cue competency at senior center billiard tournament. The free fun takes place from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday, July 19, at the Granite Reef Senior Center. Prizes will be awarded throughout the day. Call 480-312-1700 to register or for details.

Library presents free program on desert wildlife and safety. Learn about reptile behavior, habitat, preservation and safety with a trained volunteer from the Phoenix Herpetological Society. The program starts at 2 p.m. Friday, July 19, at Appaloosa Library.  

Programs for children with special needs available throughout the summer. The Adaptive Services Center provides smaller staff ratios and activity adaptations with an emphasis on positive social interactions. Inclusion services are free. Call 480-312-2204 for details.
