Fatal Hit and Run Suspect Arrested

Yesterday detectives from the Scottsdale Police Department Vehicular Crimes Reconstruction Unit made an arrest in the 6/8/15 Fatal Hit and Run collision involving 65 year old Dr. Robert J. Arceci.

At 7:00 a.m. on June 8, 2015, Scottsdale Police Officers responded to a two vehicle traffic collision between a motorcycle and landscape truck at the intersection of 69th Street and Shea Blvd. Tragically, the operator of the motorcycle, Dr. Robert J. Arceci died on scene as a result of injuries sustained in the collision. Dr. Arceci was traveling west on Shea.

The landscape truck, towing a trailer, attempted to make a left hand turn from eastbound Shea to northbound 69th Street. As the vehicle made the turn the motorcycle collided with the trailer. The truck pulled over and remained on scene with two occupants, while the driver fled the scene on foot. The driver of the truck was soon identified as 26 year old Ruben Santiago-Lopez, a Mexican National.

Detectives were able to secure an arrest warrant for him, but learned that he had fled to Mexico. For over 15 months, detectives worked tirelessly with Santiago- Lopez’s family members and Mexican authorities to locate him and encourage his surrender.

Suspect-Ruben-Santiago-LopezOn Monday evening (11/7/16), Santiago-Lopez turned himself in at the Nogales, Arizona Port of Entry and was extradited to Maricopa County yesterday.  Santiago-Lopez is facing charges of Failing to Remain at the Scene of a Fatal Collision (Class 2 Felony) and Causing Death by Use of a Vehicle (Class 4 Felony).

The Arceci family related that they are pleased with the Santiago-Lopez’s arrest and they have asked for privacy as this case moves forward.
