Three Scottsdale projects capture environmental design awards; two earn top honors

Scottsdale’s Tom’s Thumb Trailhead and the Nodal Water Garden captured top “Crescordia” awards recently at the Arizona Forward Association’s 33rd Annual Environmental Excellence Awards banquet.

Arizona Forward called the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead, a “… remarkably sustainable civic building (that) charters new territory not just for its environmental integration, but for its self-sufficiency, as the site is not connected to conventional municipal infrastructure.” The Crescordia award recognized the city along with Fucello Architects and Redden Construction.

The trailhead is three miles south of Dynamite Boulevard on 128th Street; get a virtual tour at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RW0iSBYx-iM.

Arizona Forward lauded Nodal Water Garden by Arizona artist Jeff Zischke, which “… celebrates the strategic and economic role canals have played in the Valley’s growth.” The temporary floating, solar-powered artwork was located in the canal between the Soleri and the Marshall Way bridges in Downtown Scottsdale last November for one of Scottsdale Public Art’s annual Canal Convergence events. In addition to those Crescordia winners, Scottsdale’s Via Dona Trail received an Award of Merit.

The Via Dona Trail connects neighborhoods to the McDowell Sonoran Preserve, enhancing connectivity for bicyclists, pedestrians and equestrians in a way that preserves rural character while offering access for those with disabilities. This award recognized the city along with Okanogan Trails Construction, Coffman Studio and Jack Gilcrest Landscape Architect.
