Scottsdale transit partnership earns Outstanding Transit Organization distinction
The City of Scottsdale and Dunn Transportation have been named the 2013 Outstanding Transit Organization by the Arizona Transit Association (AzTA) and the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) for the joint development and operation of the fare-free Scottsdale Trolley system.
AzTA is a statewide not-for-profit public private transit association that provides advocacy and education of public transportation services and programs. Its annual recognition is granted to an organization that demonstrates outstanding innovation, creativity, customer service and operational improvements in providing public transportation services.
From its modest beginnings as a two vehicle downtown service back in 1991, the Scottsdale Trolley has evolved into a core feature of Scottsdale integrated transit operation. Between 2007 and 2012, the Scottsdale Trolley system grew in productivity by more than 300 percent – from 281,000 boardings annually to nearly one million boardings last year. In 2010, a seasonal Hospitality route was added to link visitors and resort guests to high profile events like the Waste Management Phoenix Open and the Barrett-Jackson car auction.
“The working relationship between Scottsdale and Dunn Transportation exemplifies the best in public-private partnerships,” said Madeline Clemann, Scottsdale’s transit manager. “The city works closely with Dunn Transportation to keep cost low while providing residents and tourists with the highest level of service.”
“Few metropolitan areas can boast of a trolley system like the one serving Scottsdale,” said Dunn Transportation CEO Margaret Dunn. “Because of our efforts and commitment to the city, Scottsdale Trolley riders want to come back again and bring friends and family along for the ride.”
Performance benchmarks established by comprehensive surveys of the Trolley’s effectiveness show a 98.5 percent on-time rate, a near-zero accident rate across two decades and a customer satisfaction rate that hovers near 100 percent.
