Civil Traffic Cases

Every year over 100,000 cases are heard in the Scottsdale City Court. More than 75% of those cases are civil traffic violations.

Civil traffic violations include, but are not limited to, speeding, failure to provide proof of registration, a valid driver license, car insurance, and failure to obey a traffic control device.

Scottsdale City Court also handles parking and photo enforcement violations.

When you receive a citation that contains a civil traffic offense only, you are afforded different options to resolve the charge. They are as follows:

Pay The Citation

Each civil offense is accompanied by a fine or sanction amount, which must be paid, in full, on, or before the assigned court date. You can refer to the bond card ,that may have been given to you by the citing officer, for details on what the sanction amount will be.

Most civil traffic citations can be paid online.

Obtain Proof of Corrections; Mechanical, Registration, Driver License and Insurance Violations

If you were cited with a charge and the accompanying fine can be reduced, suspended, or dismissed with proper proof of correction, it will be necessary for you to mail or bring in the proof along with any reduced fine that will be imposed.

Insurance Violations

Some insurance charges may be dismissed by providing valid proof of an insurance policy to the court. The policy must cover the vehicle in question on the date and time of the alleged violation.

Refer to Fine/Fee Schedule for additional information.

Registration Violations

For violations of A.R.S 28-2532Anot part of City of Scottsdale web site, the fine will be reduced to $139.60 if you provide a valid copy of the vehicle registration.

Refer to Fine/Fee Schedule for additional information.

The charge can be dismissed if the vehicle was properly registered prior to the violation.

Driver License Violations

If the charge is for failure to provide or carry a valid driver license, the fine can be suspended by providing a valid driver license.

Refer to Fine/Fee Schedule for additional information.

Equipment Violations

Proof of correction of a equipment or mechanical violation may suspend the fine if receipts of repair or purchase are provided to the court.

Attending Defensive Driving School (DDC)

If you are eligible, you may also attend defensive driving class. Please refer to our DDC information page for terms and conditions.

Request a Hearing

If you believe you are not responsible for any of the cited violations, you may request the Court to set a date for a civil traffic hearing.

The request can be made in person or by mail.

At a civil traffic hearing, you and the officer are provided the opportunity to state the facts of the case to a Civil Traffic Hearing Officer who will then decide the case.

You may file a written request for a hearing in absentia.  You must show why attending a civil traffic hearing would cause a substantial hardship.  A substantial hardship is more than a mere inconvenience and must be based on extraordinary circumstances.

Request a Court Date Extension

If you are unable to resolve your case on or before the court date given to you by the officer, you may request a continuance by completing a motion to continue or appearing at the Scottsdale City Court.

A motion to continue must be filed in person or by mail and the Court must receive the completed motion prior to the court date.
