  2012-13 Green Building Lecture Series dates and topics announced

The city of Scottsdale is kicking off another series of Green Building lectures. The Green Building program advocates responsible use of our natural resources in the design and construction of our built environment. Green Building lectures are from 7 to 8:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month – September through June, except in January, at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road. The lectures are free and open to the public. RSVPs are not necessary.

• Sept. 6 - Scottsdale Green Building Outlook 2013: Scottsdale continues to use a mix of codes, standards, guidelines and voluntary programs. How does this benefit building users, the development community, building industry and community-at-large? Hear about Scottsdale’s recent initiatives to save energy and build green.

• Oct. 4 - Sustainable Urbanism and Green Neighborhoods: Hear about on-going efforts and attributes of green neighborhoods in south Scottsdale and downtown.

• Nov. 1 - Energy Audits: Making Sense of the Results and Taking Action: Learn the results of the Scottsdale home energy audit program and recommended improvements based on housing characteristics in the south Scottsdale area.

• Dec. 6 - Water Reuse Application: Rainwater and Graywater Case Studies: Does it rain enough in the desert to collect rainwater? Learn about water reuse applications for irrigation and other uses.

• Feb. 7, 2013 - Edible Landscapes: Can you eat your grass? Hear about food in the alley and non-conventional landscapes.

• March 7, 2013 – Green Labels and Healthy Homes: What is an Environmental Product Declaration? Learn about the good and bad of green labels.

• April 4, 2013 - Passive Design Strategies: Insulation Versus Mass: Is it better to use mass or insulation for maintaining indoor comfort? Find out about strategic differences between using mass materials such as adobe, masonry and concrete versus insulation.

• May 2, 2013 - Alternative Building Materials and Systems: Discover how efficient building systems conserve energy and preserve our natural resources. These are materials that are compatible with our harsh desert environment that could be rapidly renewable and support the local economy.

• June 6, 2013 - Innovative Green Built Projects: Showcase of recent environmentally sensitive residential and commercial projects.
