Burn calories, generate electricity at innovative Scottsdale fitness center

A new fitness center opening near Scottsdale Road and Shea Boulevard this weekend is as green as they come.

Billing themselves as Arizona’s first eco-friendly fitness center, Off the Grid Fitness reused as much construction material as possible when creating their new location at 10050 N. Scottsdale Road. The facility features products manufactured from recycled material throughout, including remanufactured gym equipment. Off The Grid’s owner, Eric Guilleminault, is even encouraging neighboring businesses to join in recycling at their retail center.

But what sets Off the Grid apart from other green businesses is the fact much of their exercise equipment actually generates electricity as people are burning calories.

“Most of our cardio machines are either self-powered or wired to return energy back to the grid,” says Guilleminault. “This means that the energy of the person on the cardio machine is actually producing is actually helping provide power to the gym or even someone else in our city.”

Scottsdale Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane, who will attend a ribbon cutting at Off the Grid at 9 a.m. Saturday, March 24, thinks the new businesses is a perfect fit for Scottsdale.

“Scottsdale is home to many innovative companies, but Off the Grid Fitness takes that to an entirely new area,” says Mayor Lane. “It’s one thing to say you are a green company, but it’s something entirely different to create a fitness facility where patrons can actually generate electricity back to the grid. That’s really something unique, and just the kind of innovation we welcome in Scottsdale.”
