Scottsdale welcomes Guardian 8

A company moving its headquarters to the Scottsdale Airpark has created a new professional security device that combines nonlethal pepper spray with cutting-edge technology.

Guardian 8 is moving its corporate headquarters from Kansas City to Scottsdale, citing the availability of talented workers and the strength of the investor market. Company officials say they expect to hire up to 15 people in 2012 across a number of specialized occupations.

“We began our search for key skills as well as supporting suppliers, and Scottsdale has its own center of gravity that serves the company rather well,” said Steve Cochennet, Guardian 8’s chief executive officer.

Company leadership already includes a number of Scottsdale executives, including chief of operations Paul Hughes, who previously worked as director of new markets for Taser International.

“We are very pleased to welcome Guardian 8 to the growing number of thought-leading companies choosing Scottsdale,” said Scottsdale Mayor W.J. “Jim” Lane. “The people coming to Scottsdale with Guardian 8 are creative innovators who chose our city because of the talented people and positive business environment here. It is a great fit, and I am sure they will be another very successful Scottsdale company.”

Guardian 8’s flagship product is the G8, a device that adds Bluetooth connectivity to a pepper spray-based device that also includes a camera and microphone to enhance incident reporting. The G8 is a recipient of a 2011 “Accolade” award, earned by the security industry’s most innovative new products.

The company is moving into an existing space in the Scottsdale Airpark on Feb. 1.
