Scottsdale's CAP Basin Sports Complex honored
Facility named Project of the Year by American Public Works Association
Scottsdale’s CAP Basin Sports Complex has been awarded the American Public Works Association’s Public Works Project of the Year.
CAP Basin Sports Complex is a 71-acre state-of-the-art competitive sport field complex offering tournament-level playing conditions. The design of the park allows it to serve as both a sports complex and a detention basin for the Bureau of Reclamation property behind the Central Arizona Project dike.
The association’s award recognizes the partnership between the city, the project’s consultant/architect/engineer and the contractor. The project team included Engineering and Environmental Consultants design firm and Valley Rain Construction. The national award is being presented in the “Structures between $10 million to $100 million” category. The city will receive the award on Monday, July 16, in Tucson at the Arizona Chapter Statewide Conference Awards Dinner.
From neighborhood outreach to design and construction, the project took more than 5 years to complete. To fund the $12.6 million project, Scottsdale citizens approved a bond in 2000. In addition, the city received a grant from the Arizona State Parks’ Local, Regional and State Parks Heritage Fund.
The project was possible through the cooperation of the Bureau of Reclamation and the non-profit Phoenix Thunderbirds, which contributed funds to originally purchase the land.
The park offers 10 soccer fields (four lighted), basketball courts, a playground, lighted pathways and public art. Since opening last September, the complex has attracted national and regional tournaments. Sports played at the facility include soccer, lacrosse, football, rugby and ultimate Frisbee. The fields also serve as parking for more than 6,000 vehicles during the FBR Open.
The American Public Works Association is an international educational and professional association of public agencies, private sector companies and individuals dedicated to providing high-quality public works goods and services.
