Community Day features array of activities at Chaparral Park
Residents are invited to enjoy Community Day at Chaparral Park from 1 to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17. The event is free and offers three great events in one – Public Safety Day, Chaparral Park extension grand opening and a youth football clinic.
Starting at 1 p.m., Mayor Mary Manross will celebrate the park extension grand opening by throwing out the first pitch at the north ballfields. Following that, the Mayor and the Scottsdale Public Art Program will dedicate the new public art piece, entitled Terraced Cascade, at 1:15 p.m. located at the Xeriscape Garden. Lorna Jordan, the Seattle-based artist who created the piece, will be on hand to talk to community members.
Beginning at 1:30 p.m., the Mayor will join Fire Chief Willie McDonald and Police Chief Alan Rodbell for the kick-off to Public Safety Day at the soccer fields. There will be various police and fire demonstrations from 1:35 p.m. to 3:10 p.m. The program includes an extrication, K-9 and mounted unit demonstrations and more. Booths from various organizations will be set up, providing residents with a variety of safety and security tips. A children’s area will feature fun and educational activities and a Department of Public Safety helicopter will be on display.
Residents can enjoy self-guided tours of the park to learn about the new park features, such as the Off-Leash Area and ballfields, take part in a scavenger hunt at the new Xeriscape Garden, participate in a pet parade, enjoy guided tours of the Xeriscape Garden and take a self-guided tour of the new Chaparral Water Treatment Plant located at the park.
The Arizona Super Bowl Host Committee is sponsoring a youth football clinic in conjunction with Scottsdale Parks and Recreation from 2:30 to 3:30 p.m. The clinic is open to youth ages 7 to 14. Participants will learn basic football lessons in a safe and fun environment with an emphasis on health and wellness. Current and former NFL players, NFL staff and local volunteer coaches will be on-hand to instruct participants.
A free trolley will provide service between the park and the Granite Reef Senior Center so residents can also enjoy the annual Arts and Crafts Fair, which is happening from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the center. The trolley will run from 12:30 to 4 p.m.
A detailed schedule of events is available online at www.ScottsdaleAZ.gov/parks/chap/opening. For more information or questions residents can call Chaparral Park at (480) 312-2353.
