November 6 Community Design Studio Lecture Features
a "Visualizing Density" Program Scottsdale’s Community Design Studio lecture series will feature a program on “Visualizing Density” on Nov. 6 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Stage 2 of the Scottsdale Center for Performing Arts, 7380 E. Second Street. Landscape architect and land planner Julie Campoli and aerial photographer Alex S. MacLean have joined forces to create a program to illustrate and help planners, designers, public officials, and citizens better understand, and better communicate to others, the concept of density as it applies to the residential environment. This lecture will share this information and show attendees how density can be designed to be a solution instead of a problem. Consumer demand for more walkable, mixed-use, and concentrated neighborhoods is already on the rise among some demographic groups—the 70 million retiring baby boomers, for example, and young professionals seeking transit-oriented development for shorter commutes. Yet in many established urban neighborhoods, concerns about traffic congestion and parking, and strains on infrastructure, schools, and parks have led to resistance to more concentrated settlement patterns. How do we overcome these objections and plan and design for “good” density?
