Free paper shredding event Oct. 27
aims to prevent identity theft
The Scottsdale Police Department is teaming up with the Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine Oct. 27 for the city’s fifth “Shred-It” event.
Local police officers will be on hand to assist Scottsdale residents with the shredding of up to four boxes of personal documents at no charge from 8 to 11:30 a.m. at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
The city’s solid waste division also will be on hand with a truck for children to operate and the city's Fire and Code Enforcement departments and the Arizona Attorney Generals Office will provide free information handouts. Detectives from the Scottsdale Police Department's Fraud Unit will also be available to answer questions.
Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano recently recognized the Northeast Valley Coalition Against Methamphetamine with an Innovative Strategies Award. The award recognizes the coalition for its unique approach to addressing the impact of meth by scheduling shredding events throughout the Northeast Valley communities and for addressing the critical need to prevent identity theft through education to help reduce the effects of methamphetamine.
According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft impacts at least 9 million people each year. Shredding documents, instead of throwing them in the garbage, is an essential tool in combating identity theft.
Due to a high level of interest at previous city shredding events, Scottsdale residents are encouraged to arrive early. Event participation is on a first come, first served basis. This is the City of Scottsdale’s fifth “Shred-It” event since April 2005.
