Scottsdale election cycle shifts to fall;
candidate packets remain available
Scottsdale’s next municipal election is still more than 11 months away because of a shift in dates to comply with new state law.
The mayor’s position and three seats on the City Council will be on the Sept. 2, 2008 City of Scottsdale ballot. Candidate packets for those seeking to have their name on the ballot were released earlier this month and are available at the City Clerk's Office in City Hall, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd.
Nominating petitions containing at least 1,652, but no more than 3,304, valid signatures must be submitted to the City Clerks’ office between May 5 and June 4, 2008.
Nominating petitions are currently circulating in the community and residents are limited in the number they can sign. Arizona law permits qualified electors to sign one nomination petition for each office to be filled. That means in the 2008 Scottsdale City Council, an elector may sign up to three nomination petitions for Council and one nomination petition for Mayor.
Candidates must receive a vote on the majority of ballots cast to be elected outright in the Sept. 2 election. If not, the top two vote getters per open seat will advance to a Nov. 4 Runoff Election (coinciding with state and federal elections on the same day).
Successful candidates will be sworn into office during the first City Council meeting of January, 2009.
More information on Scottsdale elections and how to become a candidate is available through the city of Scottsdale’s Candidate Handbook. A copy is available for viewing and downloading at this link:
