¡Celebración Comunitaria! – Sept. 29
Hispanic Heritage event at Scottsdale Civic Center Mall
The city and Scottsdale’s Human Relations Commission invite residents to attend the 5th Annual Hispanic Heritage ¡Celebración Comunitaria! event on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 5 to 10 p.m. at the Scottsdale Civic Center Mall amphitheater, 7380 Scottsdale Mall.
Scottsdale’s Celebración Comunitaria brings the rich Hispanic culture and traditions to the community through:
- Educational booths promoting various Hispanic cultures and countries, as well as community services and programs available to residents
- Increased exposure to art forms and displays of local artists showcasing their talents
- A main stage featuring live entertainment representing different Hispanic countries including the Latin band “PowerDrive” and Salsa-performing dance team “Rumba Azteca”
- Educational children activities that include piñata races, face painting, tissue flower, sombrero and Huichol mask-making projects, a rock wall to climb and prizes
- Food vendors showcasing cuisine from various Hispanic and Latin cultures
The Scottsdale Prevention Institute will showcase a community art project. Event participants will have the opportunity to use color and shapes on individual art pieces to express this year’s art exhibition theme: Freedom. These individual art expressions will be displayed on the event’s “Tree of Life” which will be placed behind center stage.
The Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art will also be open from 5 to 7 p.m. during the event to showcase art reflecting the Hispanic culture.
Scottsdale’s commitment to the educational objectives of the ¡Celebración Comunitaria! will also be demonstrated through youth scholarships. Proceeds from this event along with Scottsdale’s 14th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Dinner Celebration, to be held on Monday, Jan. 14, 2007, will be used to fund these scholarships.
Hispanic Heritage ¡Celebración Comunitaria! is free and open to the public. This event, which began as an internal city of Scottsdale employee event in 2000, has grown into a communitywide celebration attracting nearly 3,000 people every year since 2002.
