Health screenings aim to reduce falls by seniors
Scottsdale senior citizens are invited to a pair of free health screenings as part of the “2 Fit 2 Fall” campaign to reduce falls and injuries among the elderly.
The screenings include hearing, vision, fall risk and blood pressure checks. Speakers also will give 10-minute presentations on medication interactions, body mechanics, nutrition, in-home safety, foot care, proper footwear and how to decrease fall risk through good balance.
Here’s the screening schedule:
- Monday, Sept. 24, 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Granite Reef Senior Center, 1700 N. Granite Reef Road.
- Sept. 28, noon to 3 p.m., at the Via Linda Senior Center, 10440 N. Via Linda.
The 2 Fit 2 Fall campaign is a collaborative effort by the Scottsdale Fire Department, the Scottsdale senior centers and Scottsdale Healthcare to educate seniors on the steps they can take at home and in their personal lives to reduce their risk of falling.
As part of the effort, the Scottsdale Fire Department is launching Home Safe Home, a program where trained volunteers visit seniors’ homes to conduct visual inspections and educate homeowners on fall hazards. If home modifications are needed, SFD can refer the resident to nonprofit organizations.
