Scottsdale’s freeway photo enforcement program resumes at 12:01 a.m. this Thursday, Feb. 22, on the city’s 7.8-mile section of the Loop 101 Freeway.

Starting Thursday, motorists who are photographed traveling 11 mph or more over the 65 mph posted speed limit will be cited for a speeding violation.

The fine for a typical photo enforcement citation is $162.

The Scottsdale City Council voted last month to resume the Loop 101 Freeway photo enforcement program, which covers the portion of the freeway within the Scottsdale city limits, about 7.8 miles from north of the 90th Street/Pima Road interchange to the Scottsdale Road interchange.

The cameras are scheduled to be operated by Scottsdale through June. During that period, Gov. Janet Napolitano has directed the Arizona Department of Public Safety to ready a statewide photo enforcement program.

Scottsdale concluded a nine-month photo enforcement demonstration program along its section of the Loop 101 Freeway in October. A preliminary evaluation of the program found speeds were reduced by an average of about 10 mph during that time. Vehicle collisions also were reduced, generating a savings of up to $11 million in health, safety and vehicle repair costs.
