The Scottsdale City Council will consider reactivating a Loop 101 Freeway photo enforcement program at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 30.
The Council will meet at 5 p.m. in the City Hall Kiva, 3939 N. Drinkwater Blvd. The meeting will be televised live by CityCable Chanel 11 and will also be available via streaming video from the city’s Web site at www.ScottsdaleAz.gov.
Gov. Janet Napolitano on Tuesday requested that Scottsdale resume photo enforcement along its section of the Loop 101 Freeway through June. During that time period, she has directed the Arizona Department of Public Safety to ready a statewide photo enforcement program for Arizona’s highway system.
Scottsdale officials are meeting this week to determine when the Loop 101 cameras could be reactivated for the local photo enforcement program. Scottsdale launched a photo enforcement demonstration program one year ago along its 7.8-mile section of the Loop 101 Freeway.
A preliminary evaluation of the program found speeds on Scottsdale’s section of the Loop 101 were reduced by an average of about 10 mph during the eight-month citation phase that ended last October. Vehicle collisions also were reduced during that time, generating a savings of up to $11 million in health, safety and vehicle repair costs.
Scottsdale has conducted a photo enforcement program on city surface streets since 1997.
