Inspiring executive to deliver keynote address at MLK Jr. Community Dinner Celebration

Steve Pemberton, Chief Diversity Officer at Walgreens, will be the keynote speaker at the 2013 Martin Luther King Jr. Community Dinner Celebration on Tuesday, Jan. 15.

One of America's most inspiring executives, Pemberton’s journey to corporate America has been all but traditional. He is recognized as one of the nation's leaders on matters of diversity and inclusion and their importance to the growth of American industry. The annual event, sponsored by APS, begins with a 5:30 p.m. registration and reception, followed by a 6 p.m. dinner and recognition. It will be held at Chaparral Suites, 5001 N. Scottsdale Road. Tickets can be purchased at www.ccdarizona.org or by calling 480-312-3030. The cost is $60 per person.

In addition to the MLK Jr. Community Dinner Celebration, Community Celebrating Diversity also sponsors the following programs in honor of King:

Voices:  Tuesday, Jan. 15, 2013, Saguaro High School. This event is for students only and is not open to the public. Each year, high school students from across the Valley are treated to a special appearance by the MLK Jr. Community Celebration keynote speaker.

Diversity Champions: Diversity Champions -- individuals who exemplify the philosophy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and who have enriched the community by empowering others – are honored each year at the MLK Jr. Community Celebration. Eligible nominees must work, live or volunteer in Scottsdale. The nomination deadline is Wednesday, Dec. 12. Nomination forms are available at www.ccdarizona.org.

Scottsdale Community Collaborative Youth Scholarships:  The Scottsdale Community Collaborative offers scholarships to college-bound high school students who demonstrate academic achievement, community service, diversity and financial need. Sponsors of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and La Gran Fiesta (originally the Hispanic Heritage Celebration) events, along with the educational partnerships of Community Celebrating Diversity and the Scottsdale Unified School District, fund the scholarships. Since 2007, 18 students have been awarded a total of $45,000 in scholarships. The application deadline is April 1, 2013. Students can get an application and criteria at www.ccdarizona.org.

Peace & Community Day:  Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, noon to 4 p.m., Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts, outdoors, free admission, open to the public. Peace & Community Day commemorates Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The event is part of the Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts’ Sunday A’Fair concert series. It features the Valley’s top musicians, along with a fine arts and crafts market and fun activities for children and families. Guests are invited to bring blankets, lawn chairs or picnic baskets and enjoy a relaxing afternoon of great entertainment. Regional Unity Walk: Saturday, Feb. 2, 2013, walk begins at 10:30 a.m., report to starting locations by 10 a.m.
Assemble at Tempe Lake Marina, free admission, open to the public.  Scottsdale joins other Valley cities and Arizona State University for the annual Unity Walk to promote mutual respect and understanding.  Each year, the walk begins at a different location and culminates at the respective host city for a day of celebrating the unity of our communities.
